Erica's Big Chop Journey

Everyone has a natural hair journey. Most of the time this journey begins a transition period or an all-out Big Chop. My journey started with a big chop. It was the summer before my freshman year of college and I decided I was going to chop it all off. Before that, I had started transitioning and went from long straight hair to the “auntie “ cut than I just chopped it all off.

It was an amazing feeling and everyone told me it looked amazing on me! I wasn’t too worried about my hair growing back because my hair always grew back no matter how I cut it. I have type 3B/3C/4A hair so its fairly easy to manage especially in those earlier stages of my big chop.

I couldn’t believe that I had decided to chop all my hair off before starting the journey that would eventually lead me to create Erica’s Beauty Shop. I remember moving into my dorm everyone really loved my short look and I got a lot of your so pretty with short hair I can only imagine what you look like with long. I shared photos and everyone agreed I looked good with both. But there is something so liberating about cutting all your hair off and watching it grow. Since that time I cut off all my hair I had about two smaller big chops due to me getting length happy and causing heat damage.

I haven’t done one recently and my routine has become set in stone. I’m a firm believer in leaving your hair alone and it will thrive. I keep my hair in protective styles mainly now and it currently past my shoulder.
